Clinical Ethics

What Do We Do?

The Clinical Ethics Consultation Services (CECS) serves as the clinical arm of the Union Health Ethics Committee, supporting patients, families, and healthcare professionals in addressing ethically complex situations that arise during patient care. Our mission is to promote thoughtful, respectful, and ethically sound decision-making by fostering open communication, clarifying values and goals, and helping resolve conflicts or dilemmas related to medical care.

Ethics consultations are available to anyone directly involved in a patient's care, including patients, family members, physicians, nurses, social workers, and other members of the health care team. Common consultation topics include end-of-life decisions, advance directives, surrogate decision-making, treatment refusals, questions about appropriate levels of care, conflicts among care participants, innovative treatments, and concerns related to moral distress.

The Ethics Team provides consultation through discussion, education, facilitation of communication, and collaboration with all involved parties to support patient-centered care and informed decision-making.

Ethics consultation is available 365 days a year. Routine and urgent consultations can be requested through the hospital switchboard, with after-hours emergent support available through the house supervisor.

Our goal is to ensure that ethical concerns are addressed with compassion, clarity, and respect for the values of every individual involved.

Who Can Make a Request?

Any individual primarily involved in a patient's care may request the CECS.

  • Patients
  • Family/patient's legal representative
  • Physicians (staff, residents, students)
  • Nurses
  • Social workers
  • Etc.

When Should an Ethics Consultation be Requested?

Ethics consultation is available whenever there is uncertainty, disagreement, or concern about the ethically appropriate course of action in a patient's care. Consultations can help patients, families, and healthcare professionals work through complex situations and support thoughtful decision-making.

What Happens After a Consultation Is Requested?

An ethics consultant will begin by gathering information about the concern and assessing the situation. This may include reviewing the medical record, speaking with those involved in the patient's care, and facilitating discussions to improve understanding and communication.

When appropriate, a formal care conference may be arranged to address the issues involved. Recommendations may be provided and documented in the patient's medical record.

For Patients and Families

When a patient, family member, or legal representative requests an ethics consultation, the attending physician is informed and kept aware of significant developments. The ethics consultant can explain relevant hospital policies, facilitate communication among care team members, and help ensure concerns are heard and addressed.

For Health Care Providers

When a healthcare provider requests an ethics consultation, the consultant works closely with the requester and, when appropriate, the attending physician to better understand the situation. The consultant may facilitate communication among members of the care team, provide guidance regarding hospital policies, and assist in addressing complex ethical concerns. Discussions with patients and families occur in collaboration with the attending physician.

Request an Ethics Consultation

Any person involved with the care of a patient can ask for an ethics consultation, including the patient or their family. If you are a patient or the family member of a patient and you would like to request an ethics consultation, please see the button below. While anyone can request an ethics consultation, due to privacy concerns, we will only be able to discuss patient information with the patient's legal decision-maker.

An ethics consultant will reach out to you within 24 hours or the next business day. If you feel the issue is urgent, please ask your bedside team to request an ethics consultation on your behalf by contacting the hospital operator.
